Impact in Southern Hills

Custer School District – School-Based Substance Prevention and Early Intervention

Full implementation of the targeted population program this year ensured that eight students and their families received timely support to address substance use before it progressed to addiction. The program also helped students meet court obligations and extracurricular activity requirements. Without this local resource, families would have needed to seek services in Rapid City; which is an option that is often unrealistic due to transportation barriers. Student feedback reflects meaningful impact. One student shared they gained practical skills to handle peer pressure around drinking. Another noted that after stopping use, they recognized how much they had given up and reported improved mental health and renewed engagement in activities they enjoy. A new lesson introduced this year focused on perspective through a structured “scavenger hunt” activity. Students were asked to find peers with differing viewpoints and engage in respectful discussion. During reflection, many expressed surprise at the similarities they shared with classmates they did not typically interact with. The activity fostered new connections, increased empathy, and encouraged more inclusive social interactions. Students began mixing outside their usual peer groups, offering more words of encouragement, and showing stronger peer support, evident during school events like track meets, where students actively cheered each other on and later reflected on the positive impact of that support. An additional success has been renewed community engagement in the program’s evaluation process. Increased local investment and enthusiasm highlight the value placed on sustaining and strengthening these prevention efforts.
