Your Generosity in Action

As time went on, the three boys began to understand that they were loved and cherished by the staff at the Club. They slowly became more confident in themselves, more capable of handling their emotions and began to see their own full potential.

By partnering with the United Way of the Black Hills, you are also partnering with the Club for Boys and Girls in Lead/Deadwood. Your generosity helps to enable after-school and child care programs to serve more children in Lead/Deadwood, which help children realize their full potential.

in Hill City & Keystone

Shaynna made an offer to buy a home in Hill City, and it was accepted. Shaynna faced two major but solvable problems with the home: the house didn’t have an occupancy permit and Shaynna didn’t have enough cash for a down payment.

Buying a home can be a complicated endeavor, and that keeps a lot of community members from ever owning their own home. Shaynna went to NeighborWorks® Dakota Home Resources for help. After just a 30 minute meeting with a housing counselor, Shaynna had applied for funding to assist with her down payment and learned how to get an occupancy permit. The loan was approved and she received the occupancy permit. Shaynna is now a proud homeowner.

“We did not have water, heat, or power. We became homeless and lived with other people or in motels,” recalls Jaden. Jaden’s parents were addicted to heroin and meth. One day, Jaden was fed up at living like this and notified his school liaison officer, and his parents were arrested.

Soon after their release, they relapsed, were arrested one last time and lost custody of their children. Jaden and his siblings were placed in foster care.

Jaden’s foster family supported his academic success and encouraged him to participate in after school activities. After joining his friend on a fishing trip put on by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills, Jaden knew he needed a mentor. Jaden was matched with John, and he had a life changing impact on Jaden’s life through hunting and fishing.

“Jaden saved our lives and John saved his,” says Jaden’s mom. With the help of John and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills, Jaden’s potential has been defended, ignited, and empowered.

Last spring, 17-year-old Amy was experiencing thoughts of suicide, self harm and depression. She had experienced a lot of trauma in her life. Amy was referred to Canyon Hills Center in Spearfish, a youth focused residential treatment center that serves kids from 10-17 who have emotional, behavioral health, and educational challenges. There, Amy received the help she needed. She also set a goal to graduate from high school and worked hard to make that goal happen. Amy graduated from high school and is now continuing her education at a vocational program to become a nursing assistant.

Adversity like what Amy faced can create negative, long-lasting consequences. With mental health intervention, Amy not only achieved her goal of graduating high school, but is now working to secure a financially independent future.

A Sturgis family noticed that their daughter was exhibiting some major changes in her daily life. She was becoming more moody, more tired, and was no longer interested in sports.

The family reached out to WellFully, a local organization that is dedicated to helping youth through mental health crises. WellFully conducted a drug and alcohol assessment for the young girl. From that assessment, the team at WellFully led the girl to attend intensive out-patient treatment, and the complexity and the seriousness of her usage became more clear. Ultimately, she was referred to a higher level of care. Today, she is sober and has a bright outlook on the future.

Funding from the United Way of the Black Hills allows WellFully to have the resources necessary to help the youth of Sturgis and Meade County at a moment’s notice. WellFully’s mission helps save lives, and we are honored to partner with WellFully and you to provide mental health services to Sturgis and Meade County.
