Impact in Rapid City

Big Brothers Big Sisters-Community – Based Program (One-to-One Mentoring)

Michael and Garrett have been matched since 2022, and their relationship shows what long-term mentorship can make possible. When Garrett first became a Big, he was new to the area, and Michael was a pre-teen who enjoyed “touristy” activities and was working toward an important goal: learning how to better verbalize feelings. Michael needed guidance and consistent one-to-one time with a trusted role model who could meet him where he was and encourage him to grow. Over the years, the two have grown genuinely close. One of their favorite traditions has become attending the annual Monster Truck Rally in Rapid City, an outing they both look forward to and one that has become a touchpoint for connection, fun, and consistency. Garrett often reflects on how much Michael has matured. Michael has grown into a teen who can express himself, shows curiosity about current events, and is building independence and confidence. Most recently, he even started his first job, an important milestone that reflects growing responsibility, communication skills, and motivation. Their match highlights the power of consistent, supportive mentoring relationships to strengthen self-expression, confidence, and readiness for the future.
