Impact in Sturgis

Crisis Intervention Shelter Service

One evening, the Crisis Intervention Shelter Service received a call from a woman experiencing family violence. She shared the challenges that led to her current situation and after exhausting all options, she had moved in with her aunt and uncle. Her uncle was in poor health, and her aunt, struggling with alcoholism, often lashed out at her verbally. The woman endured constant criticism and emotional abuse, being called “worthless” time and again. One day, after finally standing up for herself, her aunt became physically aggressive which included pushing her out of the house and forbidding her from returning or retrieving her belongings. With no phone, no possessions, and nowhere to go, she wandered the streets until she found a church. Hoping for help, she asked to use their phone and was connected with our shelter. Since arriving, she has worked hard to rebuild her life. With support from our advocates, she has begun counseling, found employment, and started saving for her own apartment. While she continues to stay in shelter, she is now focused on healing, stability, and independence. Her story is a reminder that hope and safety can begin with just one call for help.
