Big Brothers Big Sisters – Community-Based Program (One-to-One Mentoring)

Big Brother and Little Brother have built a steady routine together, meeting regularly and packing those afternoons with the kind of fun that helps a relationship grow naturally. Big shared that he genuinely looks forward to their time together and has such a great time with Little. Recently they attended a Monster Truck Rally. Big laughed that he may have been even more impressed by the trucks than Little was, but the shared experience gave them another memory to add to their match. The next time they met, Big brought a hands-on project idea: launching a rocket. He found a kit at a local hobby store, and the two of them jumped right in. The activity was a hit, Little was excited, engaged, and proud of what they built together. Afterward, he asked to build more things, showing growing curiosity and confidence to try new, skill building activities. Match Support Staff noted how meaningful it was to see Little getting into more hands-on projects and exploring new interests with encouragement from his Big. Big also shared that Little is “up for just about anything” and usually goes along with what Big suggests. At the same time, Big recognized an opportunity to help Little practice offering ideas too, building leadership, voice, and ownership in the relationship. Overall, Big expressed how much he has enjoyed being paired with Little and how positive their connection has been. Alongside these fun experiences, the match is also supporting Little’s resilience in everyday life. Match Support Staff checked in with Little’s caregiver about ongoing bullying concerns at school. Little’s caregiver confirmed that it is still something they deal with but shared that Little “handles it well” and is good about going to trusted adults in and out of school, like his Big. Through consistent time together, positive shared experiences, and steady adult support, this match is helping Little strengthen confidence, expand interests, and build skills that show up both in and out of school.
