Your Generosity in Action

Thanks to your support, United Way of the Black Hills is proud to share real stories — told in the words of our partners — that show how your generosity is making a difference every day.

Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity (BHAHFH)

Bob sustained injuries leaving him paralyzed from the chest down when he was sixteen years old. Bob had a very positive attitude and went on to have a long and successful career.

Now retired, he and his wife, Linda, qualified for the Homeownership program in December 2023. By early March 2024, they met the program requirements to be assigned a lot.

In talking with Bob and Linda about the accommodations their home would require, it became clear this would be different from a typical Habitat build. The square footage of their 2-bedroom home will exceed that of a typical 4-bedroom home built by BHAHFH to allow for Bob to access the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen using his electric wheelchair.

The groundbreaking was held in August 2024. Western Dakota Technical College students and faculty are assisting in building this home as volunteers. This project inspired the partnership between Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity and Western Dakota Technical College.

Thanks to generous donors like you, United Way of the Black Hills is able to make stories like this possible!
