Youth and Family Services, Inc – Girls Incorporated of Rapid City
Molly is an energetic young girl who began attending Girls Inc. when she was seven years old. She and her sister participate in programming almost daily, allowing Molly to build strong relationships with staff and peers. When Molly first joined our program, staff noticed she struggled with reading fluency and comprehension. After speaking with her parents, we learned that these challenges also impacted on her confidence and performance in school, particularly in subjects such as social studies, science, and language arts where reading plays an important role in understanding content. With the support of her parents, staff assessed Molly’s reading level and confirmed that she was reading more than one grade level below expectations. Molly began participating in the program’s structured literacy support sessions. During these sessions, staff implemented targeted strategies including phonics practice, guided reading, sight word development, vocabulary building, and reading comprehension discussions. Molly was also encouraged to choose books that matched her interests, helping make reading a more enjoyable and meaningful experience. Over time, Molly began to show steady progress. With consistent encouragement and individualized support, she became more comfortable reading aloud and asking questions when she did not understand something. Staff observed improvements in her fluency, confidence, and willingness to engage in literacy activities. Molly began to express excitement about reading and often chose to spend part of her free time with books. After several months of participation, Molly’s parents shared that they had noticed improvements in her grades and her attitude toward school. Molly began speaking more positively about her learning experiences and proudly shared stories about projects she completed and tests she performed well on. One of Molly’s biggest accomplishments was volunteering to read aloud in a group setting, demonstrating both increased confidence and growth in her literacy skills. Molly’s positive energy makes her a joy to be around. Her enthusiasm and confidence have grown significantly since she first began attending the program. She now approaches challenges with a more positive mindset and demonstrates perseverance when learning new material. Reflecting on Molly’s journey highlights the impact that individualized support, encouragement, and access to enriching educational opportunities can have on a young person’s academic success and self-confidence. Molly’s story illustrates how Girls Inc. programming helps youth build foundational skills that support success in school and beyond. Through consistent literacy support and a nurturing environment, Molly has made meaningful progress toward grade-level reading and has developed a stronger belief in her own abilities. We look forward to continuing to support Molly as she grows into a confident learner and leader. *Name changed for confidentiality purposes.
