Black Hills Special Services Cooperative – BHSSC's Home Visiting Programming
A Nurse Home Visitor (NHV) created a keepsake canvas using a child’s footprints for a new mother. The mother added the baby’s birth information and displayed the canvas above the crib. Another NHV indicated that when she gave the Easter book to a mom, the mom said she was so thankful as she did not have much to put in her child’s Easter basket. Families consistently reported that hands-on activities help reinforce and apply the skills discussed during home visits, and children often request to read their new books immediately creating an opportunity to strengthen bonding and early literacy. Puzzles also served as meaningful birthday gifts for families with limited resources to purchase presents.
