Black Hills Works Inc – BHW Affordable Housing
In 1977, JJ’s parents made a life-changing decision to adopt his little sister, Emily, while they were living in another state. “Back then, doctors said it was very likely Emily would never talk, walk, or live any kind of meaningful life, given her disabilities.” “Hearing those words was heartbreaking, and yet, against all odds, Emily’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable.” Her father served in the U.S. Air Force and was ultimately stationed here at Ellsworth AFB. Their original plan was to return to their home state, but that plan changed thanks to Black Hills Works. “Our parents recognized that the services and supports offered by Black Hills Works were truly exceptional, far beyond what any other organization could provide. It became clear that they were giving Emily and others the opportunity to live with dignity, independence, and purpose.” These days, Emily is proudly employed assisting with laundry for Black Hills Works contract custodial teams. She also does Special Olympics track, bowling, and cheerleading, her absolute favorite. JJ notes, “There is no other program in this community that has a greater impact on enabling lives to be lived fully and independently. Emily’s life today is a testament to the incredible work being done through Black Hills Works. She enjoys a good life – one filled with purpose, independence, and joy – all because of the compassion, dedication, and opportunities provided by this organization” says JJ. “We are deeply grateful.” Expanding Housing Options Emily is just one of 380 Black Hills Works participants who receive “right sized” housing, whether it be in a full-care home, a Black Hills Works apartment, or a smaller community home. Emily shares a house with three other women in a quiet Rapid City neighborhood. This “smart home” safely provides the support Emily’s needs while also enhancing her independence. To accommodate increased demand, Black Hills Works is purchasing additional family homes in neighborhoods across Rapid City. The agency is also constructing a community-based, state-of-the-art full care home for eight participants, providing a home to age in place. “Without these options, many adults like my sister would be relegated to nursing homes or other less personal, less empowering settings,” said JJ. Black Hills Works is honored to provide affordable housing for Emily and the numerous other participants who benefit from our spectrum of housing options. We are thankful for the support of the United Way of the Black Hills to help make this happen! We look forward to continuing to provide safe, appropriate, and affordable housing for them in the decades ahead.
