Working Against Violence Inc – Project THRIVE
When Erin arrived at WAVI’s shelter in Rapid City, she carried little more than a backpack and was holding the hands of her two young children. After years of emotional abuse and escalating violence, she made the difficult decision to leave when she realized her family’s safety could no longer wait. Erin arrived exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsure of what came next. Through WAVI’s Project THRIVE, she and her children were welcomed into a safe, supportive environment where they could finally rest without fear. They received meals, clothing, emergency shelter, and comprehensive case management designed to help them begin again. Erin’s case manager walked alongside her through every step of the process. Together, they replaced important legal documents that had been destroyed by her abuser, filed for a protection order, and connected Erin to in-shelter therapy services. As she continued healing and preparing for independent living, WAVI helped transition her to a personal therapist so she could continue receiving long-term emotional support. Slowly, life began to feel stable again. Her children returned to a regular school routine, laughter returned to their family, and Erin secured safe housing and employment. For the first time in years, she began making decisions based on hope instead of fear. Today, Erin continues rebuilding her life with confidence and support from her community. Her story is a reminder that when survivors are met with compassion, safety, and consistent support, healing becomes possible.
