Consumer Credit Counseling Service of the BH – Housing & Financial Counseling & Education

A young couple from Meade County came into the office seeking help managing and paying down their debt. Despite having good incomes, they were experiencing financial strain due to childcare costs, dental, medical debt, groceries, and student loan repayment, compounded by a temporary reduction in work hours. They had also been relying on credit to cover medical expenses and were experiencing frequent overdrafts. Their total debt load was approximately $25,000, slightly above the national average for households carrying debt. Their monthly obligations, including minimum debt payments, childcare, car payments, dental expenses, and student loans, consumed a significant portion of their income and left little flexibility for emergencies. We suggested they try to qualify for a home equity loan but were unable to qualify. Through enrollment in a Debt Management Plan (DMP), we were able to significantly reduce their monthly payments and provide immediate budget relief. The orthodontic account was paid off in early 2026 and eliminating overdrafts further improved stability. This couple sought help early and engaged fully in the process, resulting in a more sustainable financial path. Many households delay seeking assistance, which can make recovery more difficult over time.
