Impact in Rapid City

Lost and Found Assoc.-Campus Connections

Lost&Found is the most active student organization on the Black Hills State University-Rapid City campus. Just this semester, the organization has organized a Chalk the Walk, a Day of Kindness Event, tables that provide fidget toys along with information on ADHD and depression, at least one QPR training, a domestic violence panel, and other events. This lively and hard-working chapter also promotes in-group community and friendships with potlucks, movie nights, and a white elephant exchange. I am a Sociology Lecturer at the BHSU-RC, and I am also the faculty advisor for the Lost&Found group. I teach an undergraduate research methods class, and we chose to volunteer with and survey and interview Lost&Found mentors. We did a general check-in to gauge the students’ satisfaction with the group, but we also asked them if the group helped their mental health. The results were uniformly positive; participants think the group helps promote community and prevent suicide, both in the university and within the Lost&Found group. This group is extremely active, delightfully effective, and a beautiful vehicle for linking students and enlivening and educating the university campus. I am honored to work with these devoted students.
