Journey On Inc.-Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors (LOSS) Program
On May 12, 2018, my son Dillon tragically took his own life in front of me, beginning my journey of grief. Despite my efforts, I couldn’t stop him. The LOSS Team quickly arrived on the scene, providing invaluable support. They acted as a bridge between my family and the authorities, guiding me through the overwhelming moments and ensuring that I never felt isolated. Drawing from their own experiences as survivors, they offered me hope and reassurance that I could overcome this tragedy and eventually find healing and peace. The support group offered by the LOSS Team has been a tremendous help for my family, providing a safe space for us to process our emotions and reminding us that we are not alone in our struggles. Participating in the 8-week grief class, I came to understand that the bewildering emotions and challenges I was facing were normal aspects of grief. This realization helped me navigate my life and relationships in a healthier way, alleviating the sense of confusion and isolation that I had been experiencing. It’s commonly stated that an average of twelve people are directly impacted by each suicide, and survivors themselves face a heightened risk of completing suicide. I strongly believe that the assistance and support provided by the LOSS Team saved the lives of seven people within my circle, including my own. Without their intervention, I might have succumbed to the same fate as my son. Today, I’ve found purpose and strength in volunteering with the LOSS Team for the past four years. It allows me to support and share my story with other survivors, offering them the guidance and understanding that I once received. In doing so, I honor my son’s memory by spreading love and support to those in need. Diana Spencer, LOSS Team Volunteer 5 years
