Your Generosity in Action
On a recent Friday afternoon, a call came into a local school in the Black Hills from a concerned mother. She had just become a single parent, recently lost her job, and had children recovering from illness. With no food at home and her final paycheck not arriving until Monday, she was desperate to find help for the weekend.
Thanks to Feeding South Dakota’s BackPack Program — supported by United Way of the Black Hills — her children were immediately enrolled and sent home that day with food bags. The school coordinator also provided information about the Mobile Food Pantry and the district’s own pantry services.
“I never thought I’d need to use these services,” the mother shared, “but I’m so grateful they were there when we needed them most.”
This story is one of hundreds shared over the 17 years the BackPack Program has been active in the Black Hills region. Every week, this initiative ensures that children facing food insecurity don’t go hungry over the weekend. And every week, parents breathe a sigh of relief knowing their children have something to eat.
Thanks to generous donors like you, United Way of the Black Hills is able to make stories like this possible!
