In the Northern Hills, a young man found himself far from family and support, navigating the challenges of mental health on his own. Originally from the Souther United States, he had moved to Spearfish with hopes of independence but soon faced his first significant manic episode as an adult, far from the familiarity and comfort of home.
With the guidance of his family and the support of a local friend, he connected with Complete Health, a partner agency of United Way of the Black Hills. Here, he received not only a diagnosis of bipolar disorder but also the insight and tools he needed to understand and manage his condition.
While his journey to stability wasn’t without struggles, Complete Health remained a steadfast partner every step of the way. The initial medications helped, but even more importantly, he learned to recognize when to ask for help. During a particularly challenging period, he temporarily returned to the South to be with family. Despite the distance, Complete Health ensured continuity of care through telehealth appointments and remote lab work.
Eventually, he returned to Spearfish with his mood stabilized, ready to resume his independent life. Today, this young man is thriving — active, engaged, and empowered by a deeper understanding of the importance of mental health and the critical role community healthcare can play.
