Victims of Violence Intervention Program
A client who has recently checked into shelter showed up with nothing to show for identification other than a tribal identification card, which can be a huge barrier to accessing certain basic needs as well as housing.
Shortly after she got settled, we were able to assist her in obtaining a brand-new birth certificate and we now have a social security card on the way as well. This has allowed her to not only apply for state economic assistance and subsidized housing but also has helped expedite the process for her to receive her disability (SSDI) due to her medical needs.
There is a long road ahead, but she is well on her way. She has no plans to return to the Rapid City area as she feels safer in a community farther from her abuser.
