Your Generosity in Action
Thanks to your support, United Way of the Black Hills is proud to share real stories — told in the words of our partners — that show how your generosity is making a difference every day.
Volunteers of America Inc – Mommy’s Closet
At the Potato Creek Wacipi, a grandmother shared her experience with the VVOA staff. She mentioned that she had seen them at a previous pow-wow but was unable to approach them before the Grand Entry.
She explained that during dinner, families are focused on feeding everyone and preparing for the event, leaving little time to seek assistance. She could only come to the VOA staff after the Grand Entry, once her obligations were met and she had a few moments to herself.
This courageous grandmother demonstrates the importance of family and culture. By listening and learning from her, the VOA staff made her feel heard and understood. She shared her story of struggling to provide for her family since taking in the children, and how they cannot afford necessities with the additional family members in the home.
She was able to obtain diapers for the grandchildren she is raising. The grandmother expressed profound gratitude for Mommy’s Closet’s willingness to come and serve her family and community.
Thanks to generous donors like you, United Way of the Black Hills is able to make stories like this possible!
