A couple from the Southern Hills faced a financial crisis that threatened their home when their mortgage company abruptly stopped accepting payments and initiated foreclosure. After falling behind on mortgage payments in 2022 due to a job furlough, they had diligently resumed payments once employment was restored. Despite their efforts, foreclosure loomed, adding immense stress and uncertainty to their lives.
That’s when they reached out to Consumer Credit Counseling of the Black Hills for help. The team immediately got to work, guiding the couple through a challenging situation. They helped them apply for assistance through SD Cares and reached out to the home loan servicing office to advocate on their behalf. The team also connected with the South Dakota Attorney General’s Consumer Affairs office, which prompted a swift response from the mortgage company—a turning point in the couple’s fight to save their home.
Through their persistence and the support they received, the couple secured a zero-interest loan from SD Cares, allowing them to catch up on payments without needing a costly refinance. Though the mortgage company attempted to collect additional legal fees, Consumer Credit Counseling of the Black Hills stepped in to help, ensuring that the couple could challenge these fees.
Today, they remain in their home, relieved and grateful for the assistance they received. “We are just so happy and thankful that we were able to keep our home,” they shared.
