“We did not have water, heat, or power. We became homeless and lived with other people or in motels,” recalls Jaden. Jaden’s parents were addicted to heroin and meth. One day, Jaden was fed up at living like this and notified his school liaison officer, and his parents were arrested.
Soon after their release, they relapsed, were arrested one last time and lost custody of their children. Jaden and his siblings were placed in foster care.
Jaden’s foster family supported his academic success and encouraged him to participate in after school activities. After joining his friend on a fishing trip put on by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills, Jaden knew he needed a mentor. Jaden was matched with John, and he had a life changing impact on Jaden’s life through hunting and fishing.
“Jaden saved our lives and John saved his,” says Jaden’s mom. With the help of John and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills, Jaden’s potential has been defended, ignited, and empowered.
This is just one story of one life changed. UWBH supports more than 40 different nonprofits serving the Black Hills and each one has hundreds of stories of lives changed thanks to your donation to UWBH.
